Little Italy

Little Italy - NYC: (english) like its name, it's coming so little. Italians are not living here. Main street where you can find the same atmosphere of the past is Mulberry Street (in the picture). It's always a pleasure walking on the street and see "Ristorante italiano", "Mozzarella, soppressata&italian foods". But... most of the time this is only the appareance... and you will find chinese and mexican people who tried to cinvince you to go inside the restaurant...telling you: "mangia, mangia". And the italian answered: "No thank you, I prefer my mum's cuisine!" (No grazie, preferisco la cucina di mamma!). Keep in touch for the next news.

Ellis Island...knowing the past to understand the present

Ellis Island - NYC.(english) It was this place where each immigrant lived the first months of their life in this new land. It was here that took place health and legal visits for everyone and where people knews his destiny: in or out? Between 1892 and 1954, approximately 12 million of peole coming from other countries entered the United States through the port of New York. Immagine how many stories this walls could tell us! And... who really has built this nation? This National Monument is now the natural "thank you" to all immigrants who contributed to the grow of New York and of USA.

Conoscere il passato...per interpretare il presente: Ellis Island (italian) In questi primi giorni ho avuto modo di visitare numerosi luoghi della città. Sono tre tuttavia quelli che mi hanno maggiormente colpito, ovvero: l’attraversamento del Brooklin Bridge, Ground Zero, Ellis Island. Ed è proprio da
quest’ultima che voglio partire.
Ellis Island è un’isola che si trova di fronte Manhattan ed era l’isola in cui approdavano tutte le navi degli immigranti. Era qui che venivano effettuate le visite sanitarie e legali dei passeggeri. A volte si rimaneva in queste strutture per qualche mese prima di conoscere il proprio esito, ovvero il rimpatrio oppure la possibilità di acquistare il biglietto per l’ultimo viaggio verso quella
terra chiamata “America”.
Sono state circa 12 milioni le persone che sono passate da questo luogo e che sono poi approdate negli Stati Uniti, creando quella forza lavoro in grado di generare la grandezza dell’attuale nazione.
A seguito della sua dismissione, questa struttura venne utilizzata poi come luogo di prigionia o di esilio per tutte quelle persone in attesa dell’espatrio a causa delle proprie idee politiche. Stiamo naturalmente parlando soprattutto del periodo della Guerra Fredda. Successivamente è stato
abbandonato per poi essere ristrutturato negli anni ‘90 e divenire così monumento nazionale in memoria di tutti gli immigranti che hanno reso grande gli USA e l’America in generale.
L’emozione più grande è quella che si prova visitando la struttura interna, i laboratori dove venivano visitati i passeggeri. Si possono trovare vecchi passaporti, testimonianze di chi ha vissuto quei momenti. Leggendone alcune si rimane veramente bloccati, fermi nella riflessione
più profonda e nella comprensione di quello che è stato non solo il passato di questa nazione, ma anche il nostro. La disperazione di persone che cercavano la fortuna altrove, il sogno dell’America, la lontananza da casa…spesso per sempre.
Qui di seguito ho voluto raccogliere due delle testimonianze italiane presenti nella struttura.
Per non dimenticare e soprattutto… per riflettere su quanto deriva dal passato sulla
diversità culturale presente nel mondo.

Statue of Liberty - NYC.(english) It's always a symbol for everyone who lives and come to USA. It's a national monument and, like you know, was a gift of international friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States. Think about how many people in the past arrived by ship in this land and see this statue. Their country in the past, the new hope for the future...

The brooklyn bridge

Brooklin Bridge - NYC:(english) "Walking on the bridge" it's also inspirated to this image. This bridge is the only one in New York that you can cross by walk and link the island of Manhattan with Brooklin. Some times ago, these were two indipendent cities. Crossing a bridge could mean a lot of things. Personally, I think it's like going to an old point of your life, to a new one... and this bridge, it's really charming to dream that.

Attraversando Brooklyn Bridge…(italian) Quante volte si è immaginato di attraversare un lungo ponte…quasi come volere passare a nuova vita, liberarsi delle cose che non vanno ed incominciare così una nuova esperienza? Beh, penso molte. Sognare di farlo oltrepassando il ponte di Brooklyn lascia di sicuro ancora più spazio all’immaginazione.
Questo ponte è l’unico percorribile a piedi. Si impiegano circa 15 minuti nell’attraversarlo ed è lungo poco più di un chilometro. Man mano che ci si allontana da Manhattan, cresce sempre più la visuale dei numerosi grattacieli che contraddistinguono questo centro. Oltre ai numerosi turisti che lo fotografano in continuazione, ci sono anche molti newyorkesi che si dilettano nel
leggere qualche libro o il giornale sostando sulle panche che si possono trovare lungo il tragitto. Arrivati dall’altro lato, si giunge a Brooklyn, un tempo una città separata da Manhattan ed ora una delle aree più tranquille di New York. Seppure sembra essere molto antico, in realtà non lo è. Risale al 1883 il termine della sua costruzione. Da allora è divenuto uno dei simboli del “sogno americano”, un po’ come la Statua della Libertà. Attenzione però a dire che è giovane, gli Stati Uniti sono una nazione nata molto dopo rispetto alle civiltà europee… una chiesa di 100 anni è già con una grande storia alle spalle! Si tratta solo di adeguare i giusti parametri.

Ground Zero

Ground Zero - NYC. (english) Working on going in ground zero. Who can forget 11 September 2001 and his act of violence. In that moment the world stopped to walk, to live and ...it started to reflect on what's happened, trying to understand this new reality. After 4 years, the life-city is growing again and this place it's the memory place of human spirits and brotherhood of mankind. Personally, it was an emotion to be there. I was in this place also in 2002: flag on the wall, pictures of people who died in that tragedy.. After 3 years I was so happy to see that the life it's starting again and, Ground zero represent this re-birth. That emotions and toughts will remain always in my mind...

Il secondo posto che ha colpito la mia attenzione è Ground Zero. Tutti noi conosciamo cosa è accaduto l’11 Settembre 2001. Parlando con gli americani spesso dicono, ormai il mondo è cambiato, non è più come una volta. E’ quasi normale essere invasi da intercettazioni, mille controlli per fare qualsiasi cosa. Lo si fa in nome della sicurezza. Quanto accaduto è ancora molto
forte nel ricordo di ogni singola persona. Tre anni fa mi era capitato di visitare questi posti. Lo scenario era a dir poco toccante. C’erano bandiere americane appese ai muri, foto di persone scomparse, candele e altro simile. In mezzo le gru continuavano a scavare per togliere le macerie. Oggi si sta assistendo alla rinascita di questi posti. In mezzo ci sono sempre le gru…ma
questa volta per ricostruire. Questo posto non è più il luogo di un disastro, ma il simbolo di una nazione che ha reagito, tramite le storie di tanti eroi che hanno portato in salvo molte persone, rimanendo essi stessi vittime di quanto stava accadendo.

Quello che mi chiedo è se tutto ciò è un’immagine che si è voluta dare per togliere quanto affermato da chi ritiene che tutto ciò sia il risultato del fallimento del “sistema americano”. Ma penso che poco importi. Passare in questo luogo attira alla mente tutte quelle immagini che le tv
hanno trasmesso continuamente nel corso di quei giorni… vengono i brividi solo nel pensare cosa sia potuto realmente accadere qui, le mille storie di quelle persone che si trovavano in questi posti. E seppure ci si debba sempre interrogare su quale sia realmente il miglior equilibrio per una crescita e ricchezza maggiormente condivisa in tutto il mondo, c’è da elogiare lo spirito con cui questa Nazione e i suoi abitanti hanno reagito. Probabilmente si tratta della stessa forza d’animo che ha reso questo Paese così grande.

Bull in Wall Street

Bull in Wall Street (english) - You can find this monument in the financial area of New York, in Down Manhattan. We all know what the bull and the bear mean; a bull market is good, a bear market is bad. It miss the bear, but it's ok... nobody wants to look a bear every day...above all in the financial area! One dream of each person who studied Economy is to be here... it's an incredible experience to be into the centre of the financial world.

Times Square

Times Square - NYC.(english) This is the atmosphere you can find walking around the city during the night. It's an incredible lights game. Gentlemen, this is the city that never sleep.

American Museum of Natural history

Saurischian Dinosaurs at American Museum of Natural history.(english) Walking on Central Park, you can find this building, one of the world's preeminent institutions for scientific research and education. It's very very huge and it takes more hours to visit all areas. It's possible to find a lot of images, objects and particulars from all over the world. In this time, a visitors can also find an exhibition on Charles Darwin and his theory, and a filmate on Galapagos and it's nature. When you are tired, it's really easily go out, cross the street and relax yourself in Central Park.

The Coves of Castellana

Grotte di Castellana /The Coves of Castellana (english), situated to 40 km from Bari, Italy, mark the distance of a underground river and were discovered in 1938. They form the huge speleologico complex, the most beautiful currently known on all the Italian territory. Splendid the "stalattiti" and "stalagmiti" concretions and amazing the development of the galleries.
